Singles Activities in LA
Singles in LA have so many options that it’s hard to know what to do. But not all places are right for all people. Sorting through the many options in the city narrows down the field and puts you in the right place to meet the right person.
Hottest LA Singles Bars and Night Clubs
Los Angeles is the Clubland of California. There are literally hundreds of clubs in the city and outlying areas where singles in LA can mingle. You want a spot where you can easily rub elbows with a number of other available people, but you also want to find a place that matches your personality.
Dancing: If you’re looking for a place to shake your stuff on the dance floor, the Greater LA Area provides ample opportunities. Avalon in Hollywood is 18+ on Thursday and Friday. The club stays open all night Saturday and offers an after party on Fridays. Circle Bar is the hottest spot in Santa Monica, letting you dance for no cover after a day at the beach. Downtown’s Club 740 offers three levels for dancers in a classy, old-style Los Angeles theater. The cover is steep at $20, but worth every penny. Gabah in East Hollywood has everything for R&B and hip-hop lovers who want to get down.
Live Music: If checking out a band is more your thing, you won’t want for places to meet other singles in LA. The Rainbow Bar and Grill is, among other things, the preferred hangout of Lemmy Kilmister of legendary rock band Motörhead. The world-famous Whisky A Go Go is known as the place where The Doors got their start and might be where you find love. If jazz and blues are more your thing, The Blue Whale Bar downtown provides an elegant spot to sip a drink and enjoy the sounds. Prince O’Whales in Playa Del Ray has blues jams, but might be a sports bar depending on the night. Call in advance.
Sports Bars: The sports bar presents a challenge for men and easy hunting grounds for women — ladies will easily be outnumbered, often by factors of ten to one. The improbably named Big Wangs has three locations in Hollywood, Downtown and the San Fernando Valley. Happy hour offers dirt cheap drinks with karaoke on Monday night. The Buena Vista Cigar Club in Beverly Hills offers sports bar fun with the feel and class of a cigar bar. Game Sports Bar Restaurant and Lounge offers both live music and sports on the TV. It’s a small spot, but that just adds to the intimacy of the environment.
Dive Bars: Some have a different idea of class than others. For these people, Los Angeles is riddled with dive bars. Three Clubs Cocktail Lounge in Hollywood hearkens back to Old Hollywood in all its glory. The front room is for drinkers with a back room for dancers. Rancho Bar in Altadena is known for its jukebox, big crowds and friendly bartenders. The Gold Room in Echo Park offers a drink special — $4 for a Pabst and a shot of tequila — that is incomparably cheap. The jukebox carries everything from ranchero to R. Kelly.
Events for Singles
There’s never any shortage of things to do in Los Angeles. If you’re looking for a way to avoid the club and bar scene, fear not. There are still plenty of ways to meet other singles.
Speed Dating: There are a number of speed dating services in Los Angeles that allow busy professionals on the go the opportunity to meet other busy professionals on the go. Pre-Dating, FastLife and Date and Dash are three popular speed dating services in the city. All hold regular events for a fee.
Clubs: Not all “clubs” in LA feature loud music and drinking. Others are simply clubs in the other sense of the word — organizations dedicated to a common purpose. The Los Angeles Sierra Club offers singles events such as biking, camping, climbing and caving for the active, outdoorsy single. The South Bay Fun Club has three or four activities every week such as happy hours, beach walks, cultural events and kayaking. Club 40 Something is a singles club for upscale men (over 40) and women (over 35). Cocktail parties and dances are common Club 40 Something events.
Other Places to Meet Singles
You don’t have to go to places that are explicitly for singles. There are a variety of ways to meet other available people and make a connection:
Classes: Taking classes is always a great way to meet new people. Men should look toward acting classes where there are scads of gorgeous young women looking for reading partners. Women should steer toward comedy classes, which tend to be dominated by men. Dance classes are great for either gender and offer an opportunity to get close quickly.
Co-Ed Sports Leagues: Men and women mix freely in Los Angeles-area sports clubs. If you enjoy playing sports and want to meet other active, fit singles, look into sports leagues the area has to offer.
Artist Events: In Los Angeles you can see an author, director or artist speak somewhere just about any night of the week. Such cultural events allow you to meet other singles with similar interests and aspirations.
Conventions: No matter where your interests lie, there is a convention for you in the Los Angeles area. Much like going to an artist event, attending a convention puts you in a room with people who already share your interests. Some events, such as a comic book convention, will offer incredible gender imbalances, benefitting the underrepresented gender.
Meeting Other Singles in LA
Los Angeles is known as a place where it is hard to make connections, let alone find a mate. While LA might be a harder social landscape to navigate than others, being a Los Angeleno does not condemn you to a life alone. Find what events and locations fit your personal style and interests, and then make the effort. One thing working in your favor is the natural friendly attitudes of a city where it never gets cold.
